Canada welcomes skilled workers, students and families through several programmes. Express Entry is the best known, but it is far from the only option.
How Express Entry works
Express Entry is an online system that manages applications for certain economic immigration programmes. Candidates create a profile and are ranked using a points system. The highest-ranking candidates receive invitations to apply for permanent residence in periodic draws.
What affects your ranking
Language ability in English or French, age, education, work experience and, in some cases, a valid job offer or provincial nomination all play a role. Improving your language test scores is often the quickest way to raise your profile.
Provincial nominee programmes
Provinces and territories run their own programmes to select workers with the skills their local economies need. A nomination can significantly strengthen an application.
Temporary work and study routes
Some people begin with a work permit or study permit and later transition to permanent residence. This route needs careful planning, as rules for each permit type vary.
Prepare early
- Take a language test and aim for the highest score you can
- Get your education credentials assessed
- Gather proof of work experience and police clearances
- Check official Canadian government sources for current rules before you apply
